General Conference was held the first weekend of October and we were fortunate enough to be able to watch it in our living room via the internet. I love listening to the prophets speak! The kids have grown to anticipate the traditions we've started and amazingly enough they are still generally effective. I brought out the candy buckets. When they hear a speaker say the word on the bucket they get to pick a treat from within. I know that technically I am describing bribery, but...whatevs.
Last spring we made conference journals. There are tabs with the prophet and apostles pictures in them. Jonathan and Reagan had fun trying to match those pictures to who was speaking and then try to figure out what to draw...although they only actually drew "pictures" for a few of them.
Sunday morning we kept with tradition and I made cinnabon cinnamon rolls! They are to die for and it is so much fun to see the kids' anticipation for them. And they make the house smell wonderful all morning, too!

Of course the biggest highlight of this conference was the fact that the Prophet announced changes to the missionary program. Young men can now be eligible to serve missions when they are 18 instead of 19 and graduated from high school. Young women can now be eligible to serve when they are 19 instead of 21. I thought it was pretty incredible for my kids to not only be able to listen to a prophet, but that they would be able to witness him sharing revelation and not just reminding us of all the things we've been being told for years. Adrian is now anxiously anticipating graduating from high school and then possibly leaving for a mission a few weeks later. He has already started to save money for his mission and although it's not much at this time, he is learning a valuable lesson about saving money and taking responsibility for his mission.
There were several incredible talks. I do have to say that one of my favorites though was Dallin H. Oaks. He spoke about children around the world and what so many of them are facing. He spoke of our responsibility and obligation to both the unborn and the living children on this earth. I could tell that he was passionate about the topic and it gave me chills to hear him be so direct and forceful with his counsel and position.
In general all of the talks were wonderful. The talk that has had the most direct influence in our home so far came from Dieter F. Uchtdorf. He spoke about living our lives without regrets and finding ways to make more of life. He said that we should be better, do better, and become better. Last week for family night we made a poster that says that across the top and then came up with 4 things our family could do better each day. Our chart marks our progress and for everyday that we are successful we get a sticker. After 21 days then we will get a treat! The kids decided they wanted a redbox movie night and burgerville ice cream. Done and done;) I love being able to get away with simple treats like that! Out of the last 7 days we have earned 6 stickers...one day we started off great and then some stuff happened and the evening kind of ruined it. But, we're trying!
If you missed conference or you're curious what all the hype is about I encourage you to watch/listen/read for yourself. The knowledge that I have of my Savior and the restoration of the gospel, especially the restoration of the priesthood and living prophets on the earth, brings peace and happiness to my life like nothing else could.

So awesome. What great traditions, and I know what you mean about hearing a prophet give momentous revelation. That was awesome. I was super excited about the young men age change, but when I heard the young women one I just started sobbing. It's going to be such a blessing to so many people. I am SO THRILLED!! A lot is going to change. I'm stoked.
And BTW, the whole bribery thing is way hyped up. I'm with you--so what. I was talking to somebody recently who said they read the whole BofM because of basically a bribe from their seminary teacher, and she said, "But guess what! I READ IT!!! Who cares WHY I read it! Once I read it, I didn't care as much about the reward." I think it's similar with a lot of things. Your kids are learning to love conference, and they are listening, so who cares how you get there! :)
