Derby Day!

It finally arrived...Pinewood derby day! Andrew and Adrian have only been working on the car for a couple of months:) There is a fine art to the making of a pinewood derby car...it is way more involved than I ever dreamed. My brothers made cars in scouts, but it was never that competitive...enter one Andrew. A couple of years ago there was an elder's quorum activity and Andrew almost took 1st place once he got the books, the scale, the lead, the dremel, the graphite, etc. Let's just say it was an expensive first little car. At least this time we already had all the stuff...lol!
The whole process begins with baking the wood (apparently gets most of the moisture out and makes it start out weighing less?)

Adrian with the wood after it was baked. He picked out the car design and then they spent a couple of weeks carving it out.

The unfinished product.
The pictures of the finished car didn't turn out, but here is Adrian with the car. I made some vinyl decals for the car and so it ended up being fireman themed.

And the winner is...Adrian!!! Adrian's car took 1st place overall! He was so excited. His name is going to be engraved on the pinewood derby car race trophy. Following the races the kids decided to try and do their own. Before I knew what was happening the cars were released and Adrian's car was coming down sideways and got t-boned by a tank styled car...at least he had already won! (Andrew was not very happy about this...)

Anyways, this is what we have been up to. I can only imagine when the fun will begin again for next year... (or sooner than that since the pack meeting at the end of the month is supposed to be another derby and this car is now decommissioned...)

Holy cow. This blog brought total flash backs of my child hood. My dad was obsessed about my brothers winning the Derby. How funny. I don't get it. It must be a dude thing.

We saw Andrew last night at Costco and he told us the good news about winning...and then the bad news about the car. He actually didn't seem as upset about the car as I would imagine any other guy on the planet would be if their winning car that they had just spent weeks on was now ruined. But I'm sure he doesn't mind making a new one because that's the funnest part!
