This year our church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) introduced a new curriculum and teaching style for the youth (age 12-18). Each month has a theme and then there are several questions that go along with the theme for the month. Those questions have outlines and study aids to help you learn and find the answers to those questions either on your own or as a group. The program is called: Come, Follow Me and I love it! When I first looked at it online I knew that it was something that would benefit everyone and I wanted to find out how to utilize it in our family. The goal of the program is to help the youth to become converted to the gospel of Jesus Christ. If that is what it can do for the youth then imagine what it can do for our families!
I felt inspired to use the curriculum and develop Family Home Evening lessons that follow those same themes so that we could study those topics together. We have the challenge of having young children and youth in our home and it can be pretty hard to engage everyone each week! I'll admit I have never put a huge amount of effort into it before now and I have noticed a difference in the results. Although last week Reagan did spend a huge portion of the evening in tears and wailing about her coloring page. Stinker.
The first week we did it the lesson was on the nature of The Godhead. I lit a candle with 3 wicks and we discussed how the 3 wicks were each separate yet worked together to give off light and as a whole they made up one candle. I enjoyed the candle so much that I let it keep burning as I put the kids to bed...and then as I watched some shows and folded laundry...and for a little too long I guess!
I looked up after the candle had been burning for about 5 hours to see that it had melted through the side and was pouring hot wax down the cabinet! I quickly rushed over and blew out the candle. The mess looked way worse then it ended up being though so that was good. When I was cleaning it all up I read on the bottom of the candle that it shouldn't be allowed to burn for longer than 3 hours. Ooops.
If you want to join us each week for Family Night then you should go over to my new blog: Following Christ as a Family and join in the fun!
I am not beneath begging for followers...share with your friends...the more that join us the more fun it will be as we watch the way that the gospel has the power to change lives and strengthen our families!
