This year Boy Scout Camp was held at Camp Baldwin. The most exciting thing about this to Adrian was the fact that this is the only one around here that offers the Horsemanship merit badge. Of course by the end of the week Adrian considered him an expert horseman! As much as I would love to own a horse that is no where near possible any time soon so he will just have to live that dream at camp.
The other merit badges that Adrian worked on were Leatherwork, Wilderness Survival, Camping, and Fishing. He also did a basic swim class (mainly so he could play in the water everyday!)
Last year when Adrian came home from camp the reports were mainly about how he had his things all over the campground. He also got "lost" a couple of times and ended up going to the wrong classes. That was not a surprise to us and just made me realize that he wasn't just that way at home. As he was preparing to go this year he was much more confident in his ability to keep his things together and go to all the right classes. When he got back this time around the only reports we got were about how much food he can eat! I have no doubt in my mind that he eats a lot, but it was funny having scout leaders with teenage sons telling me that he eats more than their boys who are older and bigger. I guess when I am finding that dinner doesn't stretch as far for this family anymore it is not all in my head!
The biggest thing to me about this summer versus last is how much older Adrian seems to be. I keep having to remind myself that he is now a teenager and that he really is that old! He is still a kid at heart (let's face it--most men are still kids at heart) but, he is definitely changing and maturing. I still am having to wrap my head around the fact that he only has 5 short years until he is technically an adult. He has a goal to get his Eagle Scout finished before high school and I think he can do it. He only has a couple more required merit badges to finish and then the typical rank things to do. The countdown is on!
